Sapsaree
The Sapsaree in the U.S.
The Sapsaree in the U.S. has been a sad story. Originally, the arrival of the Sapsaree was met with great optimism. Two dogs were imported to Oregon, USA. On Sept 2003, eight puppies were born from these founding dogs. On March 3, 2004, a second litter of five puppies were born. The dogs and their projeny were to be trained as therapy dogs with the Delta Society.

However, several years after this announcement, several Sapsarees, with Korean pedigree papers, were given up to the Oregon Humane Society. Assuming that there are still only 15 Sapsarees in the US, that means over half of the Sapsaree population were given up by their owners as of 2/15/06.
A few things could be assumed about this statistics:
1) The breeders were not successful in finding serious dog owners for all of the pups.
2) The breeders were not prepared to take back the puppies they produced (ie. did not have the space, the will, or the resources to do so),
3) The lack of foresight by the breeder/owners caused the majority of the Sapsaree gene pool in the US to be eliminated (ie. shelter dogs have to be sterilized unless reclaimed),and
4) The situation in the U.S. is such that there simply isn't enough interest in a breed that is often mistaken for a shaggy mixed dog.

Name: Kori Breed: Sapsaree
Gender: Male
This male was given up at one of the shelters in Oregon, but he was never listed because he nipped a child while taking some food. (Some shelters will not adopt out dogs with bite histories to the general public.) Kori seems to have been given up around the same time Kai was given up.
Kori was pulled by a private rescuer and listed on petfinder.com under Jindo/Sheepdog since the Sapsaree is not a breed choice under petfinder.com. He was adopted out in the last week of December 2005. Unfortunately, his past upbringing couldn't be overcome and he had to be put down a month later for aggression.
